The Drama and Mental Game Of every Ashes First Ball

Burns Dismissed with the Opening Delivery in Ashes series

The first delivery of an Ashes series proves far more than just a single delivery.

It represents a heart-pounding two to four seconds filled with pure theatre, when every bit of the pre-match hype finally ends.

"To set that atmosphere throughout the whole contest would prove truly special," stated English paceman Gus Atkinson when asked about this possibility recently.

"I'm aware history shows numerous iconic first-ball occasions in Ashes cricket history. The chance to join to tradition would be cool."

As Atkinson explains, that opening delivery has created several of the truly iconic cricket instances - ones that seemed to establish the tone and minimum became easy to reference afterwards...

Cummins Crashing Past Cover Field

Skipper Ben Stokes declared on 393-8 just before stumps during the first day in 2023's Ashes series

Zak Crawley dedicated the lead-up to the 2023 Ashes planning driving the opening delivery for a boundary - about hoping to "deliver a statement."

Australia skipper Pat Cummins ran in from Edgbaston when Crawley drilled a drive through cover field amid deafening cheers from the England supporters.

"I've long been a huge fan regarding the first ball in the Ashes," the opener shared.

"I've been watching it from youth so I realized a couple weeks before if should we won the toss there would be a strong opportunity of receiving it."

"I chatted to Harry Brook about it when we played playing golf on course - that it would be amazing if I could strike that first ball away and make an impact."

England didn't won that contest - while Australia dramatically took that first Test on last day - yet it was a hint of how Stokes' side planned to play aggressively throughout the series.

The Opener and English Dismissed Early

England collapsed for 147 during day one in the 2021-22 series

That moment at Birmingham remains among the few opening deliveries that went the way of England, however.

Far more typically they have been ominous signs regarding the Australian dominance that was ahead.

During the 2021-22 tour, Mitchell Starc bowled England batsman Rory Burns via a leg-stump full delivery at Brisbane becoming the first pitcher claiming a wicket on the first ball in an Ashes contest after Australian bowler Ernest McCormick during 1936.

England's preparation was inadequate so at that point during Aussie celebration the tourists took a blow to their morale.

"My emotion simply plummeted to the floor," recalled bowler Stuart Broad, watching watching in the pavilion.

"You have prepared for this series then immediately, opening delivery, he is dismissed."

The series were lost within 11 more days and the Australians claimed the contest four-nil.

The Opener's Impact Delivery

Michael Slater made 176 runs during the first innings of the 1994-95 Ashes, after cut the opening ball of the contest for four

It is also unsurprising a captain who thrived in "psychological warfare" thought proceedings were determined through a similar incident twenty-seven before.

Steve Waugh and Australia aimed for their fourth Ashes victory in a row as opener Michael Slater began 1994's series with decisively crunching English seamer Phil DeFreitas for four past the offside.

"It felt as if 'okay team we're off once more we have got them already'," said Waugh, who would play all five matches during a 3-1 home victory.

"In our minds it felt as if we're dominant already so let's just continue hammering away. We understand how we beat these guys."

Ominous.

The Bowler's Horror Delivery

The Australians made 602-9 declared during the first innings after Harmison's errant delivery, with skipper Ricky Ponting scoring 196 runs

However what if that delivery is just that - a single in ten thousand or more beginning the contest?

The wide Steve Harmison delivered to begin 2006's Ashes - when he sent the ball toward the grasp of skipper Andrew Flintoff at the slips, almost avoiding the pitch in the process - became the most remembered Ashes opener in history.

"I froze," the bowler explained journalists soon afterwards.

"I allowed the enormity of the moment get to me. It all felt so unfamiliar for me. My entire body was nervous."

"I could not get my grip from being sweaty. The first ball flew out of my grasp, the next did too, then, following that, I possessed no consistency, zero."

The English claimed the 2005 series fifteen months earlier yet were resoundingly defeated 5-0. Many believe those series ended at that very moment.

"We weren't skilled enough to defeat
