Snapshots as well as Melodies as People of Ethiopia Observe Gratitude Festival
A multitude of brightly clothed Ethiopians assembled in the heart of the city center for the yearly Irreecha event during recent days.
Irreecha is observed by the Oromo people, Ethiopia's largest population group, and takes place at the conclusion of the country's major monsoon period.
Every year, festival-goers assemble around revered rivers and lakes to give thanks to their creators for the fertile landscape that the rainy season have brought.
"I've been celebrating Irreecha for the past nine years," commented twenty-five-year-old a participant.
"In my view, Irreecha embodies my cultural background, it showcases the pride and importance of my ethnic group."
Males, females, the elderly and the young all join in, ornamented in eye-catching attire and jewellery.
They sing, dance, share stories and arrange newly gathered grass and floral arrangements in the water - symbolizing vitality, renewal and aspiration.
Global Attendance
Irreecha brings in individuals from throughout the country, visitors travel from around the world.
"I attended a year ago - it was wonderful, so magnificent, I invited my offspring with me this year," said an international guest, from Belfast in Northern Ireland.
"It's wonderful. All people greets you, everyone offers affection and expresses hospitality."
Festival Timeline
The initial day of the celebration took place on the weekend in the main city. On the next day, participants travelled to a provincial location, a settlement just outside the capital.
While Irreecha has its foundations in indigenous faith systems, it is now practiced by the larger part of the community, without consideration for their faith.
Contemporary Developments
In the recent years, the number of individuals participating in the celebration has increased dramatically. This is partly due to the rise of online networks, where various younger generation document their attire, traditional dances and vocal performances during the celebration.
Historical Context
In the past, the festival was functioned as a platform for anti-government protests - the Oromo community have historically expressed concerns about systemic disadvantages.
Nevertheless, this year's celebration took place calmly, with an emphasis on celebration, solidarity and heritage appreciation.
