NBA game action

Miami recorded eighty-six opening half scores against the Grizzlies

The Heat secured a crushing 146-114 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial basketball match after player Terry Rozier was arrested over suspected illegal sports betting.

Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was additionally detained as part of a sweeping federal investigation into illegal gambling. Both men contest the allegations.

However, the Heat were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six first-half scores to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine at halftime, the biggest halftime lead in the franchise's 37 year existence.

Adebayo led the way with 24 points and afterwards said Terry had the team's full backing.

"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother at the end of the day."

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is very dear to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our locker room.

"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces the situation."

The Trail Blazers also won their first game since the detentions, with Brazilian Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's absence and leading the team to a convincing 139 to 119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

"We all had positive times with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Arrests

Speaking about the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition," he told a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."

The commissioner also mentioned an league probe into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Hornets versus the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.

"We investigated that situation and were very transparent about it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the league office can't do.

"So, we've been working with them since then. Naturally, what they announced recently was an indictment.

"Moreover two and a half years after, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Terry.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
