Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Group

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of characters, and a thrilling plot showcasing divine entities, fiends, and sinister influences growing in power within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Key plot points for the latest installment of this adventure lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The third episode ended with a major cliffhanger and revealed the initial group of characters who will branch out from the primary party to begin their independent quest, distinct from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team consists of Teor (played by the voice actor), the agile character (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), Wicander (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

Considering 13 cast members, it was evident from the start that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

This explains, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Prelude, connecting the individual narratives before splitting into three distinct groups: Warriors, Planners, and Seekers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the warrior group is for players who are drawn to a typically action-packed battle-oriented gameplay experience where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Initially, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander might appear unsuited, but the events of the latest installment demonstrate why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the combat party.

Reasons to Leave

For one thing, the party knows exactly where to go next after a brutal first encounter with the antagonists.

An old friend of the deceased character—whose death initiated the narrative’s action—manipulated the foes for his personal gain, entering the secret base, assaulting the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The traitor then paid off his debts and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, above the urban center, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each character has a personal reason to exit the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as the companion and best friend, wants retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in Timmony and cautions that it is a hostile environment.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having defied his family’s wishes to kill the fighter and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their reputation as important members in the powerful family could enable the party reach locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, The grateful character swore a eternal obligation to The cleric for his deliverance and will now follow him anywhere.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are sought by the powers that govern the setting for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and The cleric betrayed House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by the clan.

This means them little choice but to journey toward the remote area in pursuit of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

Based on the latest episode’s post-show segment, we discover that the Soldiers table will be absent next week, leaving the rest of the participants to form the Seekers and Planners groups.

Audiences can expect finding out which adventurers will be in which group in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, released on next week.
