The 'Tuna King' is a well-known face at the yearly bidding war.

A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the calendar year.

The successful offer for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the parent firm of a popular sushi restaurant group, which manages locations domestically and abroad.

"The first tuna heralds good luck," remarked the entrepreneur, a familiar bidder at the traditional January sale.

Dubbed the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is famous for making substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Historic Precedent

After the auction, the successful bidder informed reporters that he was "taken aback at the amount," adding, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price escalated before you knew it."

This most recent acquisition tops his previous notable purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite previously commenting that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to shatter his personal record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally known for sky-high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different food company, which stated the fish would be available at its eateries across Japan.

The high-energy energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has become a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Immediate Consumption

The record-priced tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for customers at the bidder's sushi establishments soon after the auction concluded.

"I feel like I've started the year in a auspicious way after tasting something so fortune-bringing as the year starts," said one satisfied diner.
