Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate blast caused by gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The blast occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the residence in the vicinity of Verona to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were taken into custody at the location and a third person who fled after the blast was located shortly later. All three have been transported to medical facility.

The blast could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the location revealed the property left as a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the past.

Property Situation

The president of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, said the property was under an eviction order due to debts accrued by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to speak to the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the police arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents set off the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the detonation directly hit our members,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the residence, the interior minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the incident included eleven more officers of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The prosecutor thought the detonation had occurred on a story above the access point and informed the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed members had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants informed local news, mentioning that the trio had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in honoring the three men who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
