2026 Declared the Age of the Croaking Craze.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Given that a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
A Legacy of Leaping
Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. However, their prevalence has noticeably increased in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are serious Frog Games.
A Data-Driven Dive
To understand this phenomenon, I undertook a deep dive into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The data tell a compelling story: a marked uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's rising status in the public consciousness is also visible elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the explosion in gaming looks especially pronounced.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
In my opinion, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs have inherent creative potential for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and sticky tongues facilitate a myriad of innovative control schemes.
Several the showcased games directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.
Should these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be witnessing a true croaking cultural moment.
